1Getting Access & Accounts

I was just assigned turf, but my app isn’t showing it. What do I do? Ecanvasser Walk App
  1. Log all the way out of the Walk app.
  2. Log back in.
  3. Still missing? Open Settings (gear icon in the bottom right corner) and tap Sync.
  4. Still nothing? Message your OM — double-check your name is spelled correctly in the system first (one captain’s turf didn’t load because their name was entered as “Iam” instead of “Ian”).

How does turf assignment actually work — will mine ever change? Ecanvasser

Turf is pre-cut ahead of time. Your OM works with you to match you to an available turf in a neighborhood you’ve expressed interest working in. Once you’re matched, that turf is yours for the whole program — it’s static and won’t change on you later.

I can’t log in / never got my Ecanvasser invite. Help? Ecanvasser
  1. Check your email (including spam) for the invite from info@ecanvasser.com.
  2. If nothing’s there, message your OM to have it resent.
  3. Still stuck after a resend? Your OM can loop in Prabh (QC) or Marisa to manually reset your account.

I logged out to “refresh” the app and now it’s asking for a password or organization ID I don’t have. Am I locked out? Ecanvasser

Not permanently — but logging all the way out can sometimes require a password reset to get back in (this has happened to at least one captain). Try:

  1. Check if you can still log in on a different device (tablet, or the web app) — if so, your account is fine.
  2. Do a password reset from the login screen.
  3. Still stuck? Message Marisa or Prabh with a screenshot of what you’re seeing.

What do I need to finish before I’m allowed to start canvassing? Google Sheets

Check the Community Rising Neighborhood Captain Onboarding Tracker for your row. Any column highlighted gold/yellow is required before you can canvass. The tracker also links to all the quizzes you need to complete.

Be sure to also read and understand the disposition guide and safety training before your first shift.

If I text someone and get a read receipt, does that count as an Attempt? Ecanvasser

Yes.

Flag as outdated
What’s actually the difference between a Positive Contact and a Quality Contact? Ecanvasser

This is the single most-asked judgment call — here’s the official version:

  • Attempt: any attempt to reach the voter (call, text, knock) — no response needed.
  • Contact: the door opened, phone was picked up, or you got a non-opt-out text reply. “Not interested” still counts as a Contact.
  • Positive Contact: a real two-way exchange, roughly 30+ seconds — you reached a human and exchanged information. Even just pleasantries clears this bar. “Not interested” or “no reply” do not count.
  • Quality Contact: something substantive happened toward building the relationship — specifically a follow-up (“wanted to check on X you mentioned”), a check-in (“did you get a chance to look at those resources?”), or a longer, substantive conversation (likely several min).

Note: so long as you enter a clear note that starts with either ‘positive’ or ‘quality’ Prabh will be able to assess whether what you entered is correct and make any necessary changes.

How do I search for a voter by phone number? Ecanvasser (Walk App vs. Web App)

In the app: Use the Walk app’s search bar, type the number with no dashes or parentheses and include the country code (e.g. 16146360987).

On the browser: Click on Database, then Control-F or Command-F and search the phone number (no hyphens, dashes, or special symbols).

Someone I couldn’t reach texted or called me back, and I can’t find them by searching their name or number. Now what? Ecanvasser

Check the map’s color-coding instead of relying only on search — texted contacts show up in a different color pin than call attempts, which can help you spot them visually. If you’re still stuck, message Prabh directly — she can look the person up on the backend for you.

How do I find notes I already wrote for a house? Ecanvasser

How do I filter my turf to see only houses I haven’t contacted yet (or target my next pass)? Ecanvasser
  1. Open any view.
  2. Tap the striped upside-down triangle icon (or the circle with 3 lines), top right — that’s the filter button.
  3. You can filter by either Lists or Interaction Statuses:
    • Lists lets you narrow to just one turf at a time instead of seeing all of them at once (or 2, 3, etc., if you have more than one).
    • Interaction Statuses lets you choose specific statuses — e.g. anyone you haven’t contacted yet, anyone who said “Return Later / Follow-up,” etc.
  4. Check the boxes for whichever statuses you want, then scroll down and tap OK.
  5. Tap Apply Filter — you’ll now only see the houses/voters matching your selection.

Heads up: filters don’t stay active between sessions, so you’ll need to reapply them at the start of each shift if you want to keep using them.

The app shows a status I didn’t set, or my star rating vanished — is my data lost? Ecanvasser

No — it’s a display quirk, not data loss. Tapping the same contact again makes the app think you’re starting a new interaction, which defaults to “Canvass – Answered” on screen. Your real saved data is safe.

  1. Tap the 3 dots next to the contact.
  2. Tap the arrow next to the edit pencil to see the true logged status.
  3. Or check the Field Tracking view on the web app — that’s the authoritative record.

On desktop, “Phone – Answered” doesn’t prompt me for notes or a star rating the way “Canvass – Answered” does. Is that normal? Ecanvasser (Desktop/Web App)

This looks like a real gap in the desktop version, not something you’re doing wrong. In the meantime, add your notes manually even without a prompt — they’ll still save. A star rating may not be possible for phone calls on desktop; that’s the less important of the two, so don’t worry about it.

When I follow up with someone on a second or third pass, what’s the best way to update my notes? Ecanvasser (Notes field)

Add the date to the front of your new note — don’t erase or replace the old one, just add on. If the house has more than one voter on your list, also include the name the new note applies to, so it’s clear who you’re talking about.

Example: if the house has two voters, Tyrus and Tanya, and on your second pass you spoke with Tanya, your note might read: “9.4 Update, Tanya: Positive. She was glad to receive the food bank information but was running out the door and we didn’t get to talk as much as I would like. She said I could text her tomorrow though.”

My texts through Google Voice aren’t sending / I’m getting flagged as spam. Google Voice
⚠️ Program team is actively evaluating a replacement tool — no permanent fix yet.

In the meantime: vary your text wording rather than sending identical messages (helps avoid spam filters); if flagged, it typically clears in ~24 hours; if you’re fully blocked, it’s fine to canvas your turf using your own personal phone for now. Or you can use other tools like Burner app or TextNow.

Flag as outdated
Are there other texting/calling apps I can use instead of Google Voice? Burner / TextFree / TextNow / Signal

Captains have used: Burner app (paid; “solid” per team but not personally tested by leadership), TextFree (free with ads), TextNow (free with ads, no send-later feature), Signal (has some calling features). Using your personal number is also fine if none of these work for you.

When I hit “text” in Ecanvasser, it opens iMessage or asks me to set up an Apple ID — is that right? Ecanvasser

Ecanvasser’s text button opens your device’s native messaging app — iMessage on iPhone, the native Messages app on Android. If Google Voice is installed as an actual app (not just used in a browser tab), Ecanvasser will recognize it as an option as well. If you select ‘iMessage’ and don’t have an iMessage account, Ecanvasser will ask you to create one — instead you can select a different messaging app. You can also open your preferred messaging app and type in the voter’s phone number directly.

  2. Tap Contact Details.
  3. Add a Home phone number.
  4. Tap Save, then save again on the Edit Contact page.
  5. Never delete voter data — keep the old number and just add the new one.

Is there a way to flag that a voter needs a follow-up (like a resource I promised to send)? Ecanvasser / Helpdesk
⚠️ This feature doesn’t appear to be widely used yet — check with your OM if you don’t see it.

Why does the app want my location turned on? Ecanvasser

GPS Field Tracking logs pins for your interactions and your shift start/end points, but only once you grant location permission. It’s important to keep GPS on both for Quality Control and your own safety. Keep GPS on for your whole shift.

Flag as outdated
The app won’t sync, crashed, or I think I lost a note. What do I do? Ecanvasser
  • Won’t sync: check your connection, try a manual sync. Offline data is never lost — it just waits locally until you’re back in range.
  • Crashed: force-close and reopen. Your logged data saves locally before a crash.
  • Lost a note: it probably landed on the wrong record, not actually gone — check both the House Note and the specific person’s interaction history.
  • Still stuck? Post in #ecanvasser-questions-and-troubleshooting.

What’s a good contact rate — how do I know if I’m doing okay? Ecanvasser / Team Dashboard

8–12% is the expected average for cold outreach (first-time contact), counting every contact type — positive, quality, not interested, etc. Follow-ups with people you’ve already reached once should run meaningfully higher than that. Your contact rate will be impacted by location, time of day, day of the week, and even local events or weather. If you’re experiencing a particularly low contact rate, check in with your manager and reassess your schedule to canvas when people are more likely to be home. 4–7pm tends to be an effective time for voter contact.

Where do I schedule my shifts — is that the same as ADP? Google Form (scheduling) / ADP (hours only)

No — two different things. Scheduling happens through a Google Form your OM sends out roughly weekly/bi-weekly for the next 1–2 weeks (each metro has its own form link). ADP is only for logging hours you’ve already worked — it has nothing to do with setting your schedule.

Note that your Organizing Manager may elect to use a different system, so make sure you know what your team is doing.

3How We Communicate

What’s the best way to ask a question in Slack so I actually get an answer? Slack
  1. Post in the right channel — Ecanvasser/app issues → #ecanvasser-questions-and-troubleshooting; onboarding questions → #captain-onboarding-questions; general team stuff → your individual team channels.
  2. Tag your OM directly, especially if it’s urgent or specific to your team.
  3. Set your Slack display name to your full name, and add your city to your title — this helps the Program team route your question to the right person faster.

Is there a live Q&A I can join for Ecanvasser questions? Google Meet

Yes — Ecanvasser Office Hours & Help, every 2 weeks on Fridays, 1:00–1:30pm ET. Ask your OM to add you to the invite if you don’t see it.

5Team Norms & Field Judgment Calls

Why can’t I just get contact info for whoever’s living at the address now, even if they’re not my assigned voter? n/a (research design)

This program runs as a randomized controlled trial (RCT) — we only track and follow up with the specific voters on your assigned list. If someone new lives at the address, or you end up talking to someone else in the house other than your target and get their information, you can log them as a New Voter Added record (though you don’t need to add them). You should still mark the target voter on your list as “Canvass Attempt – Not Home” or “Canvassed – Moved”.

Flag as outdated
What should a good note actually look like? Ecanvasser (Notes field)

Include: who you talked to and what they care about, in their own words (“worried about the rent increase” beats “concerned about housing”); the next step, if there is one; anything that changes your next approach (best time to catch them, a dog, a broken buzzer, language spoken).

Leave out: judgments about the person (write what they said, not what you thought); sensitive non-campaign-relevant details (health, immigration status, finances, anything told in confidence); your name and the time — the system stamps those automatically.

Examples:

  • Positive — very brief, appeared to be working from home/busy, nothing we could help with but happy we were asking
  • Quality — Currently found themselves in a position as a single parent, having a hard time financially, with overdue utility bills and fears of eviction. Needs help with food, utilities, housing, and cash assistance. Told her it will take 2–3 business days to research and send a detailed text message. That was her preference, marked on the calendar for follow-up.
  • Quality — Not interested at first but asked questions about city programs to fix porches, bannisters, and awnings for seniors. Also interested in property tax relief. Happy that someone is out in the community. Okay with visits to chat and catch up. Committed to return in a week and a half.
  • Quality — Expressed concern over public transit and finding a job. Would love a call later to connect with more information on transit options and job resources.

Is there an example of a good leave-behind card or one-pager I can model mine after? n/a (example/template)

Yes — one captain (Charles Abernathy) made a personal one-pager with his own photo on it to leave at doors, and it worked well enough that leadership asked to share it as an example. It’s also captured as a screenshot in the all-OM deck (first link in the OM Command Hub) if you want to see it in context.
